Windows has several power saving features – one of which is called ‘sleep' mode. Sleep mode saves your open documents or programs and powers down your computer but allows it to quickly resume full-power operation (usually within just a few seconds) when you want to start working again.
Nosleep 1 1 – Prevent Computer Sleeping Mode
Depending on your computer's power management settings, your computer may automatically go to sleep after a period of inactivity to conserve energy – particularly common on mobile devices like laptops and netbooks.

Next to When I close the lid, select Sleep, and then select Save changes. Press the power button on your desktop, tablet, or laptop, or close your laptop's lid to make your PC sleep. Note: You can resume working by either pressing your PC's power button, pressing any key on the keyboard, clicking a mouse button, or opening the lid on a laptop.
Tap the NoSleep button to prevent the screen from sleeping. To protect your screen, the user interface will fade away. To return to normal and allow automatic locking, double tap on the screen.
For Windows 8.1 / Windows RT 8.1. Move your mouse to the lower left-hand corner of the screen and right-click the Start button or press Windows logo key + X on your keyboard. Tap or click Shut down or sign out and choose Shut down. Click the Start button and then click the Shut down button.
You get one full hour of good old silence that you can use to keep your computer from going to sleep. If you like this video and want to hear (not this one).
It's how Windows identifies this ‘period of inactivity' that can cause problems – you may not be using the keyboard or mouse but you may still be using your computer e.g. to play music or watch a video on it. In such cases you don't want to be interrupted by the computer deciding to go to sleep…
Although some well known programs like media players have the ability to tell Windows not to enter sleep mode whilst they are still open, not all programs do – and there may be other times when you want to stop your computer going to sleep.
How To Stop Your Computer Going To Sleep – You could change your computer's power management settings temporarily but would have to change them back again afterwards. A much easier way of doing it is to use Insomnia.
Insomnia is a tiny Windows program that stops your computer going to sleep as long as Insomnia is running – it works on Windows 7, Vista and XP. Download Insomnia here in a zip file then extract (uncompress) the zip file to produce 4 folders.
Look in the 32bit or 64bit folder depending on which version of Windows you have (if you don't know, see our article to find out if Windows is 32bit or 64bit). Within that folder is the Insomnia.exe program file – copy it to your desktop or elsewhere if you want to make it easier to find.
Run Insomnia.exe -the program opens as shown below:

You can minimize this window to the system tray (bottom right of screen) if you wish. Whilst Insomnia is running your computer should not go to sleep. If you want to revert back to allowing the computer to go to sleep after a period of inactivity, just close down the Insomnia program (window) – that's all there is to it :-)

For what! Prevent system shutdown, Standby, Hibernate, Turn Off and Restart?
 The reason for the development of the program is that some programs with a longer runtime have not considered this new power-saving features on the windows OS. 
 You can also manually customize the window power saving features or disable all the options and then reactivate them again, but you can save the time when use Don't Sleep. Don't Sleep can also serve as a general protection if you have started a background service or application and want to prevent turn off of the computer by itself, or other persons ergo accounts. 
 Don't Sleep has a timer that allows you to disable blocking with a timed manner, or to shut down the computer at a certain time. This is a practical function that prevents the PC to running unnecessarily, since not every PC is equipped with a quality power supply that consumes 1Watt in standby mode.
How does the program work?
 Depending on the setting, Don't Sleep reports to the operating system that it has very important tasks to do if the screen saver is to be activated or the monitor is to be deactivated. Likewise, it notifies the system that it has the highest shutdown priority to prevent other programs from receiving the shutdown command before 'Don't Sleep' and thus possibly closing before 'Don't Sleep' can intercept it.
